IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS; ‘UNIVERSITY OF THE FUTURE’ ON ITS 16th YEAR
Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, pointed that science and technology formed the future of our country and by working hard enough in this field, we would be able to reach the “level of contemporary civilizations” goal set by our Great Leader Ataturk. President Demirtaş stated that they planned to change the name of 11-department faculty of engineering into “Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering” and start education in 2021- 2022 academic year in Güzelbahçe, and pointed that their goal was to send a satellite into the space from that campus in 2023, on the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic.
Izmir University of Economics, which was established by ITO Education and Health Foundation with the attempts of Izmir Chamber of Commerce (ITO), celebrated its 16th year. Mehmet Ali Çalkaya, Mayor of Balçova Municipality, Rebii Akdurak, Chairman of the Council of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Geza Dologh, President of the Assembly of Chamber of Marine Commerce, Aydın Özcan, President of Izmir Bar Association, Aysel Öztezel, President of Board of Women Entrepreneurs of TOBB Izmir, and Members of IUE Board of Trustees, academicians, students, and administrative staff attended the ceremony at the Conference Hall.
‘500 million TL in 5 years’
In his speech, President Demirtaş, stated that goals could not be hindered by obstacles, and he said, “We said that we would build “Güzelbahçe Science and Technology Campus” sooner or later. And 10 years later, we are finally over with courts. 1:100.000, 1:25.000, and 1:5.000 plans have all been approved. We are now working on 1:1.000 scale plans. Master plan has been prepared. It is being exhibited in the foyer of the main building. Architecture and engineering projects have been contracted out. IUE Science and Technology School will start education in 2018 – 2019 academic year. We have three young students with us today. They will be students of our Science and Technology School”.
They hoped to admit students to the Faculty of Medicine this year, said President Demirtaş, and announced that they plan to open a hospital that focuses heavily on cancer, in 2019. They were planning to invest 500 million TL in 5 years and spend that large amount for the future of the country and for the youth, stated Demirtaş and said that they would offer the best quality education from kindergarten to university.
‘Izmir University of Economics will be exemplary in Turkey’
High school students would be able take university courses, and our academicians would teach high school students, said Demirtaş and he stated the following:
“Great Leader Ataturk addressed the Turkish Nation heatedly by saying, “Turkish Nation is intelligent, Turkish Nation is hardworking”, in his 10th Year Speech, but 84 years have gone by since 1933. Were we able to send a satellite into the space; were we able to switch to Industry 4.0? What did we accomplish in artificial intelligence? We are still purchasing the rockets, tanks, guns we use in our fight against terrorism from other countries, and we are purchasing computers, phones, and chips. Was Mustafa Kemal wrong then? Of course, not.
But we need to end this. Like how we fail at excavating and digging natural gas and oil. We need to end wasting many brilliant students like Aziz Sancar because they are sheepherding, or working as construction workers, or we need to end offering an education system based on rote-learning. Turkey will never be able to reach the level of contemporary civilizations with this education system. Of course, we, as Izmir University of Economics alone, cannot change the fate of this country, but I have full belief that we can do something about this and become an example. If we do not reform our education system, or support technology based universities, then we will have to be satisfied with individual successes only, as in the example of Aziz Sancar.”
25 thousand people have been employed in Izmir since New Year, but the problem is not unemployment, it is “non-professionalism”, said Demirtaş and indicated that they focused heavily on vocational school education. President Demirtaş, who mentioned that they qualified for the entrepreneurship flag for the 3rd time consecutively in “Bu Gençlikte İş Var” contest of TUSIAD, said, “Today, we have 10 thousand 199 students, 725 instructors, and 163 administrative staff. We are an innovative, entrepreneurial university and we are the University of the Future.”
‘114 new faculty members to Izmir Economics’
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Can Şımga Muğan reported that 114 new faculty members joined the University, and they had been offering education to over 10 thousand students. Prof. Dr. Muğan, who stated that the University grew by 8%, said, “The future requires an interdisciplinary accumulation of knowledge from us. And that is what we are trying to accomplish here. We hope to carry our university into the 22nd century. We have students all around the world. We are trying to influence the whole world even though we are a fairly young university”.
“The youngest member of Izmir Economics’
Academic Assignment and Promotion Ceremony also took place. Rector Prof. Dr. Muğan and President Demirtaş awarded plaques to faculty members who were promoted. At the end of the ceremony, IUE Folk Dances Club performed “War and Peace” titled show, co-written and directed by Engin Kıbrıslı, Member of Board of Trustees of Izmir Chamber of Commerce Education and Health Foundation, and Emel Akçay Uzun, Director of Promotion and Corporate Marketing Communication, which attracted great attention of the audience. Students Pelin Nur Yıldırım and Malawian Mirriam Chiudza Banda, led by Alaskar Abbasov, Music Consultant, sang the song ‘My Homeland’ in Turkish. It was quite a sight to see babies, who accompanied their parents during the ceremony.
